These four-serving meals use a 3–4 quart cooker, subject to its manufacturer’s fill requirements. Start with thawed ingredients. Browning and finishing are part of the method; slow cooking does not remove the need to check doneness.

Thaw meat in the refrigerator first. Use canned beans when specified; raw dried kidney beans must not go directly into a slow cooker. Choose the correct appliance size and keep the lid closed during cooking.
Refrigerate leftovers promptly in shallow containers and use within 3 days. Reheat on the stove or in the microwave until 165°F (74°C); do not use the slow cooker to bring cold leftovers slowly up to temperature.
